DIY electrical work in NSW: what you can and can't do

YouTube makes swapping a power point look easy. In NSW, though, electrical wiring work has to be done by a licensed electrician, and there are good reasons for it.

We service a large area including Wollongong, the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions, including Nowra, Kiama, Helensburgh & surrounding regions. See all areas we cover

What you can do yourself

  • Change light globes and plug-in appliances.
  • Reset a tripped breaker or safety switch.
  • Press the test button on safety switches and smoke alarms.
  • Replace batteries in battery-powered smoke alarms.

What needs a licensed electrician

Anything that involves the fixed wiring: power points, light switches, light fittings, ceiling fans, hardwired smoke alarms, new circuits and anything at the switchboard. Even swapping a power point like-for-like counts.

Why it matters

  • Safety: a loose earth or swapped wire can make a metal appliance live without anything looking wrong.
  • Insurance: an insurer can refuse a claim if a fire is traced back to unlicensed work.
  • Paperwork: NSW electricians provide a compliance certificate for their work. Buyers, landlords and insurers may ask for it.

Small jobs are welcome

No job is too small. If you've got a list of little things, like a loose power point, a dead light or an extra outlet, we'll knock them over in one visit.
