How to choose the right ceiling fan for each room

A good ceiling fan costs very little to run and makes summer far more comfortable. Here's how to pick one that suits the room.

We service a large area including Wollongong, the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions, including Nowra, Kiama, Helensburgh & surrounding regions. See all areas we cover

Size it to the room

  • Small bedrooms and studies: around 107 to 120 cm (42 to 48 inch) blades.
  • Main bedrooms and medium living areas: around 130 cm (52 inch).
  • Large open-plan living: 140 cm and up, or two fans.

DC or AC motor?

DC motor fans are quieter, use less power, and usually have more speeds and a remote. AC fans are simpler and cheaper to buy. For bedrooms, a quiet DC fan is worth it.

With or without a light?

A fan with a built-in LED light saves a separate light fitting in the middle of the room. If you already have good downlights, a plain fan looks cleaner.

Ceiling height

Blades need safe clearance above the floor. Low ceilings suit hugger-style fans; raked or high ceilings need a longer down-rod so the fan moves air where you are.

Outdoor and alfresco fans

Use a fan rated for outdoor or damp locations. Near the beach, choose one built for coastal conditions so the motor and fittings don't corrode.

Replacing an old fan

Most replacements use the existing wiring and wall control, but DC fans often run off a remote or a different wall switch. We'll make sure the controls suit the new fan.
