Power out in part of the house? A step-by-step guide

Losing power to some rooms but not others is one of the most common call-outs. Often it's a simple reset. Here's how to check safely.

We service a large area including Wollongong, the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions, including Nowra, Kiama, Helensburgh & surrounding regions. See all areas we cover

Step 1: Is it just you?

Check if the neighbours have power and look at Endeavour Energy's outage map. If the whole street is out, it's a network fault and there's nothing to fix in your house.

Step 2: Check the switchboard

Look for a safety switch or circuit breaker in the off or middle position. Switch it fully off, then back on. If it stays on, you're done. If it trips straight away, there's a fault on that circuit.

Step 3: Unplug and retry

Unplug everything in the dead area and try again. Plug items back in one by one to find a faulty appliance.

When to call an electrician

  • The breaker or safety switch won't reset with everything unplugged.
  • Nothing has tripped but rooms still have no power.
  • Lights are dim or flickering across the house.
  • You smell burning, see scorch marks, or a power point is hot.

Partial power across the whole house

If lights are dim everywhere or some appliances work and others don't, you may have lost one phase of supply or have a problem with the neutral. That can be dangerous. Turn off the main switch and call an electrician or Endeavour Energy.
