Older homes in Port Kembla and Warrawong: electrical things to check

Port Kembla, Warrawong and Cringila are full of solid post-war homes, many still running original or patched-up electrics. Here's what to look at if you've just moved in or are planning to renovate.

We service a large area including Wollongong, the Illawarra and Shoalhaven regions, including Nowra, Kiama, Helensburgh & surrounding regions. See all areas we cover

Start at the meter box

If you see ceramic fuses, no safety switches, or a black backing board, the switchboard is well overdue for a look. Black boards from that era can contain asbestos, so don't drill or cut them.

Look for old wiring

Some homes from the 1950s and 60s still have rubber-insulated or early plastic cable. Rubber insulation goes brittle and crumbles with age. You'll often spot it in the roof space near light fittings. If you see it, have it checked before adding anything new.

Count the power points

Older homes were built with one or two power points per room. Too many double adaptors and power boards are a sign the house needs more outlets, not more extension leads.

Check the earthing

Older homes were sometimes earthed to a water pipe. If the plumbing has been replaced with plastic, that earth may no longer work. An electrician can test it and install a proper earth stake.

Fibro walls and ceilings

Many homes in the area have fibro sheeting, which can contain asbestos. A good electrician will plan cable routes to avoid cutting it, or arrange for it to be handled safely.

Where to start

A safety check of the switchboard and circuits is the best first step. You get a clear list of what's urgent and what can wait, so you can plan upgrades around your budget.
